In 1889, the school was founded with 15 children on the roll, mainly children of the foresters in the area. Frequent mists and relatively high rainfall have created a lush vegetation with afromontane forest patches occupying the kloofs (gullies) which dot the rolling grasslands and surrounding mountains.
